  1. "       MSD DRIVE 8/9 MODIFICATION

  3. "  This file explains the modification I
  4. "used to switch a MSD single drive from
  5. "drive 8 to drive 9. Some MSD single
  6. "drives WILL NOT accept the normal
  7. "software select commands.
  8. "
  9. "  I WOULD NOT advise making this
  10. "modification UNTIL your warranty has
  11. "expired!
  12. "
  13. "
  14. "  Please follow the steps outlined
  15. "below.
  16. "
  17. " DO NOT SUBSTITUTE for the cable type
  18. "specified!!!!!!!!!
  19. "
  20. "  Make Sure the POWER IS OFF and the
  21. "Drive is UNPLUGGED.
  22. "
  23. "1) Remove the six screws holding the
  24. "cover on the drive housing. Put them
  25. "aside, do not loose them!
  26. "
  27. "2) Examine the circuit board, holding
  28. "the drive with the circuit board
  29. "towards the back of the unit.
  30. "
  31. "3) Find the two (2) blue jumpers on the
  32. "top of the board. Remove the TOP one.
  33. "
  34. "4) Examine the drive cover and see
  35. "where the cover is in relation to the
  36. "jumpers.
  37. "
  38. "5) Drill a hole in the top of the drive
  39. "and insert a double pole double throw
  40. "switch. When drilling be sure to drill
  41. "the cover FAR AWAY (next room) from the
  42. "open drive assembly.
  43. "
  44. "6) Now, take a short piece of wire (10
  45. "guage) and close the contacts on one
  46. "side of the switch effectively cl    ing
  47. "the circuit on that side. Leave the
  48. "other side open.
  49. "
  50. "NOTE: YOU must use the exact type cable
  51. "specified for this next step !!!
  52. "
  53. "7) You need a 1 foot piece of 2
  54. "conductor cable, with each wire
  55. "shileded and a ground shield. Solder
  56. "one wire to each side of the middle of
  57. "the double pole switch after you strip
  58. "the wire on both ends. Check with a
  59. "multi-meter to be sure you have not
  60. "created a short. Also check to see that
  61. "when the switch is thrown, you have a a
  62. "closed circuit on one side and      open
  63. "circuit on the other side.
  64. "
  65. "8) Solder one wire to each of the pins,
  66. "from where you removed the jumper. BE
  67. "VERY CAREFULL not to DRIP solder
  68. "ANYWHERE when doing this soldering.
  69. "
  70. "9) Now connect all the shield cables
  71. "together and solder them. Now solder
  72. "another piece of shileded cable to this
  73. "and run it out the back of the drive.
  74. "
  75. "10) Replace the cover and replace all
  76. "screws removed.
  77. "
  78. "11) Connect the shielded cable to a
  79. "screw in the back of the drive.

  82. "  You are now finished. When t     switch
  83. "is thrown one way the drive number is
  84. "8. In the other position the drive is
  85. "9.
  86. "
  87. "  While I know this works fine on my
  88. "drive, I and Software Center accept no
  89. "responsibility for any damage you might
  90. "cause, if you don't do this properly.
  91. "We cannot be held liable for any
  92. "damages that might occur.
